The Local News Map

Citytv in Edmonton added two hour-long newscasts on September 4, 2017. The newscasts feature local news seven days a week with CityNews at Six at 6 p.m. and CityNews Tonight at 11 p.m. In May 2015, Rogers Media cancelled its Breakfast Television show in Edmonton.

Current affairs shows in Cantonese, Mandarin and Punjabi were introduced to replace the local news content. These shows spend more time on each story but cover fewer stories.

OMNI Television, the multicultural broadcast wing of Rogers Media Inc., shut down its local Punjabi, Mandarin, and Cantonese newscasts in September, 2011, but still contributed local stories to the national newscasts. Finally, all local content stopped in 2013. They continue to report national news and have introduced current affairs programs that provide some local news content.

Local news continues on its sister stations, which are affiliates of the TVA and V networks, but the station’s seven transmitters will be shut down, meaning no over-the-air reception for Radio-Canada in the region. The shutdown will leave CKRT-DT in Rivière-du-Loup, owned by Télé Inter-Rives, as the only privately owned Radio-Canada TV affiliate in the country.

Quebecor announced on August 30, 2023, that it would be closing MAtv Montreal the following summer, resulting in the loss of five jobs. Three positions at other MAtv regional stations were also eliminated. The community television station was available exclusively to Videotron subscribers and launched in the 1970s. It was renamed MAtv in 2012 and English-language programming was introduced in September 2015.

CBC News P.E.I., a 30-minute local news program, will air at 11:00 p.m. AT. As of October 5, 2015, CBC television’s 90-minute local supper-hour newscasts were reduced to 60 minutes with a 6 p.m. start time in Charlottetown.

On September 12, 2025, CBC News officially launched these bureaus. A new bureau launched in Lloydminster, increasing local news coverage for CBC Television Edmonton. As of Oct. 5, 2015, CBC television’s 90-minute local supper-hour newscasts were reduced to 30 minutes with a 6 p.m. start time in Edmonton.
