On September 15, 2023, Metroland announced that all of its 71 community newspapers would immediately shift to digital-only publications, including the Etobicoke Guardian. Nordstar put its Metroland Media Group division into creditor protection under the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act as part of this restructuring plan that resulted in the loss of 605 jobs (approximately 60 per cent of its workforce), including 68 journalists. The newspaper was founded in 1917.

Kamloops This Week


The Local News Map

Kamloops This Week published its final edition on October 25, 2023, resulting in the loss of 26 jobs. The community newspaper was the last newspaper serving Kamloops. The owner cited rising costs resulting from their printer closing as well as the loss of page views and ad revenue caused by Canadian news links being blocked by Meta and Google as reasons behind the closing. On April 1, 2020, Kamloops This Week stopped publishing a Friday edition due to the impacts of the pandemic, but continued to publish a print edition once per week on Wednesdays. In January 2014, in response to the impending closure of the Daily News, Thompson River Publications Partnership Ltd. (the previous owner) announced that Kamloops This Week would increase its publication dates to three days per week effective January 17, 2014. The community newspaper published its first issue on August 28, 1988.
